Dating
Dating can be a big step for some teenagers with TS/TS+. Parents can help their teenagers deal with the issues around dating by listening to their teens' concerns and supporting them when possible. Here are some points to keep in mind:
- Some teenagers, even those who are not dealing with neurological disorders, are so concerned with being "like everyone else" that they do not think about whether they are ready to date. Let your teenager know that he/she does not need to conform to stereotypes.
- Encourage your adolescent or your teenager to go out with a group of friends rather than rushing to "be a couple."
- Encourage your teenager to choose an activity that makes the first few dates a bit shorter. The first date is more likely to be a success if it is not a marathon.
- Recognize that a teenager with TS and OCD may over-focus on his/her appearance and grooming before a date.
- Help the teenager to realize that everyone has some bad experiences dating. Don't let past experiences dictate the future ones.
- The teenager may have problems on a date because of his/her tics or other symptoms. Don't push for details, but let the teen know that you are available to listen if he/she needs to talk things through.
- Don't be surprised if the teenager's date has some familiar looking symptoms. Like tends to attract like.
