Mort Doran Research Fund

The Tourette Syndrome Foundation of Canada (TSFC) has a research fund named in honour of Dr. Mort Doran's immeasurable and unselfish contributions to the Tourette community and in perpetual recognition of these contributions and his dedication. The Mort Doran Research Fund exists to stimulate and support research that has a direct link with Tourette Syndrome (TS), its causes, treatment, quality of life issues, outcome, psychosocial issues and program evaluation. Both Clinical and basic research proposals will be considered including pilot or preliminary work.

Funding may be awarded to evaluate a new clinical program, but will only cover the costs of the evaluation process. The principal criteria used to judge applications are the relevance to the Foundation's aims; clinical relevance; the scientific merit of the proposal; the feasibility of the project; and the ability (track record) of the applicant(s) to successfully carry out the project.

Information for Applicants

  • Applicants seeking research funding from the TSFC must submit their request for funding to the TSFC National Office.
  • Requests must follow the Application Guidelines for Funding from the Mort Doran Research Fund (Annex H).
  • The deadline for applications is September 1st of each year.

Grant Amount

Depending upon the number and quality of the proposals, one to three proposals may be funded annually in the amount of $5,000 to $15,000 each.

Ethics Approval

All applications must receive approval from appropriate university or hospital based Ethics Review Board (REB) prior to being considered. Applications from outside university or hospital settings must contact the TSFC before submitting an application in order to determine how an ethics review will be accomplished. No funds will be awarded until the proposal has received final approval from an REB.

The Review Process

Three members of the Professional Advisory Board (PAB) will serve as a Selection Committee. Additional external reviewers may be added at the discretion of the Selection Committee to provide specific expertise for a given proposal. The rating of each application will be based on the criteria set out in Appendix A. The recommendations of the Committee will be forwarded to the TSFC Board of Directors for approval.
